Snow in South Africa – Now that doesn’t Happen Every Day!

With warm summers and mild winters, South Africa is a popular year-round holiday destination that attracts travellers from across the globe, but if you are heading down below the equator anytime soon, you might want to pack an extra layer!

With headlines including “Much of SA covered in a blanket of snow” and “Snow havoc in SA”, it seems winter has finally arrived in the southern hemisphere, and while South African’s are used to seeing a sprinkling of snow on top of the highest mountains, many have never seen it reach the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria in the province of Gauteng.

A cold front from the Western Cape is to blame for the recent blanket of snow, and with the SA Weather Service warning that, “Bitterly cold conditions are expected over large parts of the country this week”, those heading off to South Africa on a Malaria Free Safari in the Eastern Cape, or a sightseeing tour in Cape Town, might want to pack a pair of gloves and a hat!
