If you are looking to spend a week or two in one of the world’s best cities, somewhere where you can shop till you drop, dine to your heart’s content, dance the night away, and rely on the taxi driver to take you back to your hotel at the end of a long day, you should be heading to Tokyo, New York City or Barcelona!
A TripAdvisor survey, carried out on more than 54,000 global travellers, found that Tokyo has the most helpful locals, the best taxi services, the cleanest streets, and the best public transport in the world, and it therefore offered the best overall experience in terms of a city break.
New York City took the number one spot for best restaurants and best nightlife, Dubai is the best city in the world for shopping, and London didn’t do too bad either, picking up the title of Best European Destination for shopping and nightlife.
If you prefer to travel on your own, you should be heading to Singapore in 2014, voted the best city in the world for single travellers, but if you are worried about getting lost, head on over to Vienna, which was voted the easiest city to get around.
South Africa’s Mother City of Cape Town has the second most helpful locals in the world, just behind Tokyo, and it scooped second place in the ‘Best for Restaurants’ category, coming in right behind NYC! So if you want friendly people and good food – you know where to go!
Dubai, Cancun, and Bangkok rated first, second and third in the ‘Best for Hotels’ category, while Budapest, Lisbon and Hanoi were voted the best cities in the world in terms of value for money.
At the other end of the spectrum, Mumbai, Punta Cana and Moscow were voted the worst cities in the world, with the least helpful locals found in Moscow, Beijing and Marrakech.
So if you fancy a city break this year, head to Tokyo, NYC, Barcelona, London, or Cape Town, and enjoy the best of the best!
