Where To Stay At Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls features on most African Safari itineraries, and rightly so. Often referred to as one of the Seven Natural Wonders, this huge expanse of falling water, the world’s largest they say, is an awe-inspiring sight, and thanks to its prime position straddling the borders of Zimbabwe and Zambia, it is the perfect place to start, or indeed end, any African adventure.

But with two countries and numerous accommodations to choose from, where does one stay? Well, there really are options to suit every budget at Mosi-oa-Tunya, but if you want to treat yourself to a little bit of luxury (who doesn’t!), then here are our top picks of where to stay at Victoria Falls…

The Victoria Falls Hotel

The Grand Dame of Zimbabwe, the Victoria Falls Hotel is a charming colonial hotel set on the very banks of Victoria Falls. You can literally hear the smoke that thunders from your luxurious hotel suite, and you can walk to the falls directly from the hotel grounds. Built in 1904, it is described as Zimbabwe’s grandest and most luxurious hotel, and I’d be inclined to agree. The Victoria Falls Hotel has been beautifully restored over the years, and it remains a luxury icon in Southern Africa.

Sindabezi Island

If you are looking for a remote retreat, Sindabezi Island is the Victoria Falls Hotel for you. Set on the Zambian side in the middle of the Zambezi River, this exclusive property homes just 5 luxurious open-sided suites, each with a four-poster bed, a claw foot bathtub, and the most spectacular private viewing decks that you are likely to see in Africa. The service here is exceptional, as we found when had the entire island to ourselves back in 2015, although you need to watch out for Horace, the resident Hippo, who has been known to sneak up onto the island at night!

Tongabezi

The sister resort of Sindabezi Island, Tongabezi is the ultimate Victoria Falls Honeymoon Hotel. From its prime location on the banks of the Zambezi River, it commands the most spectacular views, and provides the perfect backdrop from romantic sunsets and sleeping under the stars. The suites are incredibly spacious and private at Tongabezi, like your own little piece of paradise. I could go on about Tongabezi all day, but you only have to take a long list at the awards it has picked up over the years (it made the Condé Nast Traveller Gold List 2018) to see just how magnificent it really is.

Toka Leya

Just down the riverbank from Tongabezi, you’ll find Toka Laya, a Wilderness Safaris Camp. Ideal for those who are looking for activities and adventure, this beautiful property features a spa, yoga classes, a gym, and an entire program of activities based in and around the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls. The accommodations here in spacious safari-style tents that are connected to the main area via elevated wooden walkways. After a day of exploring, you can relax at the pool, treat yourself to a cocktail at the bar, or head to the pizza oven for one of Toka Leya’s famous pizzas. A great choice in Victoria Falls for couples and families.

A trip to Victoria Falls is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so see it in style at one of Africa’s best lodges. They are peopled by locals rather than fellow internationals, designed to complement the natural environment, and committed to sustainability. They are a little slice of heaven just waiting to be discovered.
