The Marmot Whisperer – Only in the Austrian Alps!

There is nothing like a collection of cute photos to cheer up your Monday, and so when I came across a rather endearing story about Austria’s latest superstar – the Marmot Whisperer in the UK’s Daily Mail Newspaper, I knew I had to share it!

Matteo Walch may look like an ordinary eight-year old schoolboy, but over the past four years, he has built up a remarkable relationship with some of Austria’s most famous residents – the Alpine Marmots.

First introduced to the furry creatures when he joined his nature-loving family on a holiday to Austria’s highest mountain Grossglockner, Matteo managed to gain their trust (with the help of a box of carrots!), and is now able to pet and rub noses with members of the colony whenever he returns.

Notoriously shy around humans, alpine Marmots rarely stick around long enough for you to get a photo, but if you visit the Austrian Alps during the late summer months, you may be lucky enough to hear the distinct whistles echoing around the valleys.

Standing around 18cm tall, and weighing up to 8kg, the alpine Marmots certainly seem to feel at ease around Matteo, and whether you believe that humans can connect with wild animals or not, you cannot deny that these photo’s are absolutely adorable!

You never know where your friends are going to come from. Looks like this kid is really attuned to them so they feel comfortable around him. Guess he’s just a big brother among them. Thanks for passing this on.
