Well, the skiing season officially got underway in the Austrian Alps last weekend, but sadly, the snow has yet to arrive in many ski resorts! The temperatures have dropped considerably over the past two weeks, but with no snow forecast between now and Christmas, it looks as though many skiers will need to head to higher ground and manufactured slopes if they are to get some skiing action in this festive season.
The Silveretta Ski Resort in Montafon is one of the few ski resorts open in the Vorarlberg region, but the über luxurious ski resort of Lech and Zürs am Arlberg and the hugely popular Sankt Anton are still waiting for a heavy dusting of snow so that they can open their ski lifts.
Those lucky enough to be staying in Lech over the Christmas and New Year period will be able to practice their snowplough on one of the many ‘artificial’ slopes created using 96 snow cannons, and with limited snow available, you could well be sharing the slopes with Royalty, Pop Stars and A-list celebs – so it’s not all bad!
Austria’s famous ski resorts of Ischgl, Sölden and Kitzbühl are doing better on the snow front, and so if you are heading to one of these amazing ski resorts for your Christmas break, you can expect plenty of snow, plenty of sunshine, and all the après ski you could possibly wish for!
While I’m not a huge fan of snow, or skiing for that matter, the Austrian Ski Resorts need it now more than ever, so in keeping with the festive theme, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
