South Africa may be famous for its ‘Big Five’ but there are plenty of little guys worth seeing too, and if you are planning to visit Cape Town anytime soon, you should definitely add a trip to Boulders Beach to meet the Boulders Penguin Colony.
One of the last remaining land-based colonies of African Penguins in the world, over 2,000 birds have set up home on this windswept cove just outside Simons Town, and as it is on-route to Cape Point (part of every Cape Town itinerary), you simply have to pop by for a photo or two!
As one of the few places in the world where you can actually swim with penguins, Boulders Beach is a real highlight for nature lovers – although keep an eye open for sharks – they like this area too!
