London is renowned for being one of the most expensive cities in the world, and with an average 5 star hotel price of £232 per night, its title is duly deserved, but a recent study by Travel Republic found that England’s most iconic form of transport, the Double Decker Bus, is significantly cheaper than many popular modes of transport in our favourite holiday destinations.

Working out at just 42p per mile, London’s buses are cheaper than Tuk Tuk’s in Bangkok, which charge around 94p per mile, junk boats in Hong Kong that will set you back 90p per mile, and vintage car transfers in Havana, Cuba, which currently cost around £1 per mile.

In fact, there were only 4 cities listed before London on the ‘Cheapest Forms of Iconic Transport Around the World’ list, and they were Guatemala, where the Chicken Bus costs just 0.03p per mile, Vietnam, where Scooter Rides cost 3p per mile, Mumbai in India, where travellers can expect to pay 5p per mile for the public train, and surprisingly, Tokyo in Japan, where the average cost of a Bullet Train ticket is just 31p per mile.

At the other end of the list, the ‘Most Expensive Modes of Iconic Transport Around the World’, are found in Venice, Italy, where a Gondola Ride will set you back a whopping £53 per mile, in Zanzibar, Tanzania, where you can expect a bill of £23 per mile for a Dhow Boat Ride, and Sydney, Australia, where a Water Taxi will set you back £7.16 per mile.

When you compare the rates above, New York’s iconic Yellow Cabs are a bargain at £2.50 per mile, as are Greenland’s Dog Sled Rides at £3 per mile, although the best value would have to go to the Maldives, where you will pay £2 per mile for a Sea Plane!
