Who Books the Holidays in Your House?

When it comes to booking your holidays abroad, do you do it yourself, or do you leave it to your other half?

Well, according to a recent survey by Owners Direct, 82% of women admit to taking sole responsibility for booking the family / couples holiday abroad, and one of the main reasons they do so, it that they just don’t trust their other half to get it right!

Men, it seems, like to be involved in the initial decision-making on where to go, and which hotel to stay in, but once a decision has been made, they are happy to take a back seat and leave the booking, organising, shopping and packing to their partner/wife.

In addition to the 82% of women that said they confirm all flight, hotel, and car hire arrangements, a further 64% said they arranged travel insurance, 55% order the foreign currency, 80% buy the holiday essentials such as sun cream, and 69% arranged for the plants to be watered!

When asked why she didn’t trust her husband with the family holiday arrangements, one Lady recalled, “I gave my husband responsibility for passports one year and he informed me on the way to the airport that mine ran out whilst we were away! No flight for me, just a trip to Glasgow passport office, and then the travel agents. £450 later, I was able to join them in Portugal.

Fun stories, but this is certainly not the case in our household – I quite often find out about our holidays for the first time when I receive an email with our e-tickets!  I do, however, prefer to do the shopping and packing for our trips abroad, as while my husband has ‘packing light’ down to a fine art, I really couldn’t manage a holiday with 3 items of clothing and one (yes one!) pair of shoes!

It’s not that he wouldn’t get it right, it’s that he’d never get around to it. If he doesn’t book travel, he doesn’t spend money and he’s perfectly content that way.

    1. Hahaha… Mine is the complete opposite Jane – Can’t stop him spending money!!

We don’t do hols anymore but when we did, we always chose our destination together. We researched everything before we booked and we always had a great holiday. As for packing, that was always my job, hubby would have been happy to leave it until the night before, even if it meant dragging his clothes out of the wash basket! I think not!

    1. Hmmm, I know some men like that!! Shame to hear you don’t do hols anymore 😦

  3. We talk about the trip and loosely plan it together but I arrange everything, or it wouldn’t get done. We each do our own packing.

    1. Sounds like you have the perfect solution! 🙂
