Sossusvlei is one of Namibia’s most spectacular attractions, and whether you are heading to this African gem on an escorted group tour or a self-drive adventure, it should definitely form part of your travel itinerary.
Situated in the Namib-Naukluft National Park, one of the largest conservation areas in all Africa, Sossusvlei is characterised by its soaring red sand dunes, its large white salt pan Dead Vlei, and its breathtaking desert landscape. Perfect for those who want to stay fit during their Namibia holiday, Sossusvlei homes some of the highest dunes in the world, and with Dune 45 and Big Daddy to keep you busy, you can hike till your heart’s content.
Surprisingly, there is great game viewing to be had in Sossusvlei, and while you would have to be exceptionally lucky to see a desert adapted leopard or hyena, you can expect to see plenty of oryx, springbok, ostrich, and jackals, along with some spectacular, albeit a little scary, creepy crawlies.
If you are currently planning a trip to Namibia, and are not sure if Sossusvlei should be part of your itinerary, here are a few images that may just inspire you to head on down to the Namib Desert…
